About Medicare

When it comes to Medicare, there are basically 3 options you need to choose from. Medicare supplements (also known as Medigap plans), Medicare Advantage plans (also known as part C), and prescription drug plans (part D).

Medicare Supplement Plans

(Also known as Medigap Plans)

Original Medicare A and B is like a big piece of Swiss cheese, there are holes all over the place.  Medicare Supplements help fill a lot of those holes.  For example, original Medicare has deductibles and coinsurance of up to 20%, which is what you would have to pay out-of-pocket. Medicare supplement plans pay for most of those out-of-pocket expenses.

Medicare supplement plans are offered through private companies (like UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Humana, etc).  Let us guide you through the different types of Medicare supplement plans available in your area, so you can find the right one that meets your needs.

Pros of Medicare Supplements:

  • Little to no out of pocket expenses
  • Freedom to go anywhere Medicare is accepted

Cons of Medicare Supplements:

  • Premiums can be high
  • Must purchase drug coverage separately
  • Does not cover dental, vision, hearing.

Medicare Advantage plans (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are Medicare Health Plans offered through private insurance companies (like Unitedhealthcare, Aetna, Humana, etc) and are considered all-in-one plans.  What this means is, most Medicare Advantage plans offer Medical, prescription (part D), dental, vision, and hearing coverage all in one plan.  Most Medicare Advantage plans also offer an abundance of other benefits like gym memberships, transportation, over the counter items, foot care, virtual visits and more.

Most Medicare Advantage plans (part C) are $0 premium plans.   They do however, have out of pocket expenses in the form of co-pays and coinsurance amounts.  It is important to know that medicare advantage plans have specific networks of doctors and hospitals, so you need to make sure your doctors and hospitals that you want to go too are in network.

Pros of Medicare Advantage Plans:

  • Little to no monthly premium
  • All-in-one plans (Part D, Dental, Vision, Hearing)
  • More additional benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover

Cons of Medicare Advantage Plans:

  • Out of pocket expenses
  • Must go to doctors and facilities that are in-network
